The Arboretum at Flagstaff: Fabulous Fifties Garden
Design Approach & Features
The Fabulous Fifties Garden covers 5 acres and features the 50 most popular plants grown in Flagstaff and the Colorado Plateau. It will be the focal point for the Arboretum. We designed a series of large hills to create small private areas around the garden. As visitors enter from the south, they will pass through an arbor constructed from timbers and stone, similar to the Riparian Pavilion. A path leading into the garden splits off to the top of a small hill that affords a view of the entire garden. From here, visitors can see the Water Conservation Pavilion, which will be constructed in a style established by the Riparian Pavilion. This structure will house an educational exhibit discussing the use of water harvesting techniques complete with displays, a large cistern, and a gutter system that will capture water off the metal roof.
Other elements will include a water feature that bubbles out of a hill and down a cascade toward Willow Wash, along with a pollinator garden, wood entry arbors, stone benches, drinking fountains, a wildflower meadow, and a monster constructed by the famed mask maker Zarco Guerrero.
Project Scope
Schaafsma developed the landscape designs for this project, along with the special improvements to Sinclair Wash that comprise the water features.
