The Arboretum at Flagstaff: Cultural Garden
Design Approach & Features
The Cultural Garden will be large and circular, tilting out of a meadow 20 feet and slanting toward the south to catch the sunlight. Four large rammed-earth walls will enclose a circular central courtyard 110 feet across. The garden will feature a series of plots with high-altitude plants that have originated in the Americas and contributed to the world food supply. It will be used to grow corn, squash, tomatoes, potatoes and other plants, in four separate gardens represented by the four directions — north, east, south and west.
Earth used to build this garden was drudged out of a pond and donated by the City of Flagstaff. It will be compacted and capped with a foot of topsoil.
Project Scope
Research for the Cultural Garden was conducted with Dr. Patrick Pynes. Schaafsma Design developed the hardscape and planting designs.
